A Correlative Analysis between Adolescence Delinquency and Substance use

Abstract
The present study was intended to investigate substance related variables to adolescent delinquency, and to establish basic guideline data for preventing adolescent delinquent.
A questionnaire survey was performed to the subjects of 1440 students from 8 junior and senior high schools in seoul and other areas, and 757 delinquent adolescents in 4 randomly selected correctional institution.
The data were processed by a CDC-174 computer housed in the KAIST using SPSS program. The statistical method employed were chi-square test, eta analysis, t-test and multiple discriminant function analysis.
Results of the study were as follows:
1) Delinquent adolescents showed higher rate of current habitual substance abuse comparing with student group.
2) Delinquent adolescents showed more frequently taking a drug such as Valium, Ativan, Marijuana, Yangguibi, Naisin, Activa, Optalidon, Avil, Bond and Thinner comparing with student group. Delinquent adolescent tended to use substances, initially & recently, such as antihistaminines, minor tranquilizers, hallucinogens and narcotics, while student group used psychostimulant and caffeine containing drug.
3) Delinquent adolescents tended to use drugs after 15 years, whereas student group tended to use substances in younger age.
4) Substance use by inhalation and smoking were more favorite types of administration in the delinquent adolescent, whereas ingestion and injection were more typical ones in student group. Student group tended to use drug alone, whereas delinquent adolescent tended to use drug with their peer group. Delinquent adolescent tended to use substance more than 50 times.
5) Delinquent adolescent tended to get the substances from their peer group, small shop, or amusement quarters, while student group, get from drug store, hospital or family member.
Delinquent adolescent tended to acquire substance more easily comparing with student group. Delinquent adolescent tended to use lower cost substances lesser than 1,000 won.
6) In the motivation of substance use, the peace seeker, adventure seeker, power seeker, friendship seeker, transcendence seeker were more frequently observed in the delinquent adolescents comparing with student group, but the sex-companion seeker, and stimulant seeker were more favorite motivation in the students.
In the response toward the effect of substances, delinquent adolescent showed disturbances of consciousness, slurred speech, exhilaration, taking courage, and physiological discomfort, whereas guilt feeling and senselessness were more frequent in student group.
7) Delinquent adolescent tended to have tolerant attitude toward accident by substance use, but student group did not. Parents of delinquent adolescent were absent or did not know their children¢¥s substance use, but in case of student group, mothers only knew the fact relatively well.
8) To reveal the substance related variables which discriminated between student and delinquent adolescent by multiple canonical discriminant function analysis, 27 variables among 39 variables of substance related variables showed significant coefficient, and their correctness of discriminant function was 95.62¡Æ0.
9) Among 27 variables of substance use, variable of the highest discriminant coefficient was the frequency of substance use(discriminant coefficient: 1. 132). And other variables were as follow, the use of Activa(discriminent coefficient: 0.787), the buying drugs from a small shop or an amusement quarter(0.667), using drugs with others(0.495), the use of Ativan(0.411), the conformity toward accident by substance use(0.251), the use of sedating drug recently(0.212), the use of Avil(0.211), the buying substance easily(0.154), the poor recognition of substance use by their parent (0. 150), the use of Valium (0. 149), the use of sedating drug initially(0.139), the inhalation of Thinner(0. 114), the use of Optalidon (0. 114), the heavy use of substance(0.113) and the use of cheap substance(0.106), in their order.
